Myomorph rodents Flashcards
What beddings should you avoid
Any type of beddings with aromatic oils like pine or cedar
Rat and mice diet
Omnivorous and formulated rodent blocks (need more protein than others) should make up the majority of the diet. Can give produce as treats
Hamster diets
Foregut fermentation, formulated diets made for them and produce as treats
Gerbil diet
More omnivourous than the other herbivores with a large cecum and colon, special formulated diets and produce as treats
Hamster behavior
Nocturnal, more likely to bite especially when startled awake. Hibernate in cold temperature
Species sensitive to antibiotics
Hamsters
Rabbits
Wet tail
Diarrhea or proliferative enteropathy in hamsters.
Young-> Lawsonia intracellularis
Adult-> C. diff
Common diseases of hamsters
-Progressive cardiomyopathy leading to atrial thrombosis
-Ovarian cysts
-Lymphoma
Zoonotic diseases
-Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus
-Rat bite fever (Streptobacillus moniliformis)
Porphyrins
Oily red secretions that are normally groomed into the fur. During stress or disease lack of grooming can make it accumulate and look like blood on the eyes, nose, and fur
Common diseases in rats
-Mammary tumors (fibroadenomas)
-Respiratory disease (Mycoplasma pulmonis most common)
Least social species
Hamsters but making new introductions with gerbils can be hard
Diseases in Gerbils
-Tail slip
-Sore nose-> stress-> increased porphyrin-> irritated-> secondary infection
-Seizures in some lines
-Neoplasia-> SCC and ovarian granulosa
-Aural cholesteatoma
Common diseases in mice
-Fur mites
-Integumentary neoplasms
-Mammary tumors (Mammary adenocarcinoma)
Telling the sexes apart
Anal genital distance
Anus and genitals closer together-> female
