Myology Of The Elbow Flashcards
Elbow Extension
Triceps brachii, Anconeus
Elbow Flexion
Biceps brachii, brachioradialis, brachialis
Elbow Pronation
Pronator teres, pronator quadratus
Elbow Supination
Supinator, coracobrachialis
Triceps Brachii
O- Long head: Infraglenoid tubercle
Lateral head: posterior, lateral surface of proximal 1/2 of humerus
Medial head: Posterior humerus, below and medial to lateral head.
I- Posterior aspect of olecranon
N- Radial nerve C6-C8/ T1
A- All heads: extension at elbow
Long head: Extend and abduct shoulder
Aconeus
O- Lateral epicondyle of the humerus
I- Lateral surface of olecranon and upper 1/4 of posterior ulna
N- Radial nerve C7,8
A- Extend the elbow
Biceps Brachii
O- Long head: Supraglenoid tubercle Short head: Coracoid process I- Radial tuberosity N- Muscular cutaneous nerve C5,6 A- Forearm supination and flexion
Brachioradialis
O- Upper 2/3rds of anterior surface of lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus.
I- Lateral surface of radius just above styloid process.
N- Radial Nerve C5-C7
A- Elbow flexion
Returns arm into mid position from extreme pronation/supination
Brachialis
O- Distal 2/3rds of anterior surface of humeral shaft.
I- Ulna tuberosity, Elbow joint capsule, inferior coronoid process
N- Radial Nerve C5-C6
A- Elbow flexion
Pulls joint capsule from joint during flexion
Pronator Teres
O- Humeral head: Lower part of medial supracondylar ridge, Medial epicondyle.
Ulnar Head: Pronator ridge (medial to coronoid process).
I- Middle to lateral surface on elbow.
N- Median Nerve C6-C7
A- Pronate Arm, assist to flex elbow
Pronator Quadratus
O- Distal 1/4 anterior surface of ulna.
I- Distal 1/4 anterior surface of radius, just superior to ulna notch.
N- Median Nerve C8, T1
A- Protects the inferior radioulnar joint, pronates the arm.
Supinator
O- Lateral epicondyle, radial collateral ligament, Annular ligament.
I- Posterior, lateral and anterior aspects of proximal radius.
N- Radial Nerve C5, C6
A- Supinate the forearm.
Coracobrachialis
O- Apex of coranoid process, shares tendon with short head of biceps tendon.
I- Midway down medial aspect of humeral shaft
N- Muscular cutaneous nerve C6, C7
A- Flexion at elbow (very weak)
Cubital Fossa
Triangular space on the anterior aspect of the elbow. Lateral border: Brachioradialis Medial border: Pronator teres Apex: 2 muscles meet Floor: Brachialis Roof: Deep and superficial fascia.
Contents (Lateral to medial): Median nerve, brachial artery, biceps tendon and the radial nerve.
Can palpate the pulse of the brachial artery.
