Mycology Flashcards
Features of fungi
Eukaryotic, obligate/facultative aerobe
Chemotrophic -get nutrients from chemicals in nature
Cell wall-chitin manan polysaccharide
Cytoplasmic membrane - sterols
Divide - asexually sexually both
Classification of fungii
By morphological classification
1) yeast
2) yeast like fungi
3) moulds
4) dimorphic fungi
1) Yeast features
Round to oval unicellular
Reproduction- budding
Form creamy mucoid colonies on culture ex: saccharomyces cervisiae
Cryptococcus neo-for-mans
2) Yeast like fungi
Grows partly as yeast, partly chains
Elongated budding cells join end to end forming pseudohyphae
Ex: candidia albicans
3) moulds
Grow as branching filaments - hyphae
They may be septate,aseptate
Hyphae grow branch to form tangled mass of growth - mycelium
Reproduction - sexual asexual spores
Ex:dermatophyte,aspergillus,penicillu
4) Dimorphic fungi
At 37°C exist as yeast in host tissue
At 25° C remain as hyphal forms in soil
- most systemic infection caused
Ex: Histoplasma, blastomyces, coccidioides, paracoccidioides penicillium marneffei, sporothrix
