mycobacteria Flashcards
1
Q
Mycobacteria TB
A
- starts in lungs, form lesions, spreads to O2 rich areas like kidney, long bones, lymph on macrophages
- spread by coughing up sputum
- immunocompromised people more at risk - cant rid infection
- immunocompetent people can get rid infected macrophages but latent infection remains in granulomas
- may become active again and appear as scrofula in neck or in GI, long bones, CNS
- kids may get TB meningitis
- very resistant; treat with 4 drugs
- mycolic acid in cell wall
2
Q
Mycobacteria Leprae
A
- only 5% people susceptible
- spread by nasal secretions and skin lesions
- cant grow in vitro. prefer 30C
- replicates in histocytes, schwaan cells, epithelial
- cause nerve damage
- wide range of symptoms. some have large immune response (+PPD) and others poor immune response (-PPD)
3
Q
acid fast stain procedure
A
- carbofushion (bright pink)
- boil
- cool
- decolorize - with acid/alc
- counterstain and rinse
