Myanmar- A glimpse

A

Myanmar,[a]officially theRepublic of the Union of Myanmar 🇲🇲 formerly known asBurma, is a country inSoutheast Asia.

The country’s capital city isNaypyidaw, and its largest city isYangon(Rangoon).

The country was a British colony for a period between 1886-1948.

Myanmar got independence in the year 1948. Myanmar remained a republic nation until 1962.

On 2 March 1962, the military led by GeneralNe Wintook control of Burma through a coup d’état.

Between 1962 and 1974, Myanmar was ruled by arevolutionary councilheaded by the general.

Anew constitutionof theSocialist Republic of the Union of Burmawas adopted in 1974. Until 1988, the country was ruled as aone-party system, with the general and other military officers resigning and ruling through theBurma Socialist Programme Party(BSPP).

In 1988, unrest over economic mismanagement and political oppression by the government led to widespread pro-democracy demonstrations throughout the country known as the8888 Uprising.

After this , the style of government has always been an elected council overseen by military. .

Who is Aung San Suu Kyi ?

A

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese politician, diplomat, author, and a 1991Nobel Peace Prizelaureate who served asState Counsellor of Myanmar(equivalent to aprime minister) andMinister of Foreign Affairsfrom 2016 to 2021.

She played a vital role inMyanmar’stransitionfrom military junta to partialdemocracyin the 2010s.

His father , Aung San is considered modern Myanmar’s Father of the Nation .

Aung San Suu Kyi, whose party had won the November2020 Myanmar general election, was arrested on 1 February 2021 followinga coup d’étatthat returned theTatmadaw(Myanmar Armed Forces) to power.

Important -
Several charges were filed against her, and on 6 December 2021, she was sentenced to four years in prison on two of them. Later, on 10 January 2022, she was sentenced to an additional four years on another set of charges,and on 27 April 2022 she was sentenced to five years in prison on corruption charges.

Her political party is National League for Democracy( NLD).

Execution of democratic activists( Important)

A

Four democracy activists have been executed by Myanmar’s military in what is believed to be the first use of capital punishment in decade.

They were sentenced to death in a closed-door trial that rights groups criticised as being unjust.

Persons executed-
1.Phyo Zeya Thaw - was a former hip-hop star turned NLD lawmaker

2.Ko Jimmy - veteran of the 88 Generation Students Group

  2. Aung Thura Zaw
  3. And 4. Were executed for killing a junta informer
