What’s your research about?
I work in organization theory, particularly focusing on how alternative organizations might successfully build a more just and sustainable society.
My approach to this question is informed by:
- the mechanisms of social change identified in social theory
- the critiques of the status quo advanced by CMS
- the constructive orientation of scholarship on alternative organizations.
A key focus in my research is democracy and how new technologies might make possible new ways of coordinating social change efforts democratically

possible cooptation of the platform code by, separately, a large technology multinational and a city government.
Explores how the focal organisation reflexively conceptualised this threat in terms of competing social transformation strategies and how this informed their responses to these developments.
I expect this paper to contribute to debates regarding digital commoning, ownership and cooperatives, particularly active in Organization.

development of digital forms of emotional and spiritual connection in this primarily online-based organization
how such connections serve democratic, dialogical conflict resolution, or indeed whether these entanglements exacerbate conflict

broader research project regarding conflict between adherents of different transformation strategies within broadly ideologically-aligned social change movements.
This disagreement is a feature of democratic organizing, and yet today appears to often generate effects that are counterproductive from the perspective of the overarching social change aim.
I harbour a hunch that such conflict is often rooted in dynamics of distrust that may be explained in terms of dialectics, epistemic injustice, and the communicative norms and heuristics afforded by new communication technologies. My greater aim, then, is to explore these mechanisms and discover means of rendering such conflict more productive.
