Q

Why is the painting of the duchess hidden behind a curtain which only the duke pulls back?

A

This is a metaphor for the control the duke wishes to have over the duchess. The smiling duchess is kept behind a curtain so that the duke can have her smiles all to himself. This symbolizes the control the duke wants over his past and future wives.

Q

Why does the poem contain enjambment?

A
  • the poem is in real speech so if the couplets stopped at each line the poem would sound mechanical and not like dialogue.
  • secondly reflects the duke’s lack of self Control. Although the duke controls people around him he cannot control himself. The enjambment creates the image that the duke crazy and cannot control his outbursts.

Q

Why is the poem in one long verse?

A
  • firstly the structure shows that the duke does not stop to think about what he is saying he doesn’t care for the listener.
  • secondly the effect on the reader is that if the poem would be read aloud without pauses or major breaks, we would be overwhelmed by the poem. This reflects how the duke has an overwhelming character.
17
Q

What are the ambiguous lines in the poem and why are they used?

A

“I gave command” the reader infers that the duke gives the command to put his wife to death however we can not be sure of this.

  • secondly “as she were alive” could simply mean the painting looked life like or that she no longer lives.
  • thirdly “her looks went everywhere” implies that the duke’s wife was promiscuous.
18
Q

What is the alternative interpretation of the poem?

A

Browning’s poem can be read as a statement that Victorian men are weakened by their dependency on power over women. The dukes desire to control the behavior of his wife could be a metaphor for Victorian society’s obsession with behavior and reputation of women.
