A
the duke is looking for a new girl. A man comes to the Dukes house and he shows him the painting of his ex wife. The duke is assumed to have killed her over jealousy or belief that she had an affair.

what is the power dynamic between the duke and his ex wife?
A
The duke believes he has control over her (shown as he puts a curtain over her painting which only he can remove.) However, she has more power than him as she still plays on his mind even after death. This is a form of juxtaposition.

he is insecure and hurt that his wife looked to other men.
this goes against the patriarchal idea of a man, especially a Duke.
