Adenosine in the brain
In the brain adenosine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. This means, adenosine can act as a central nervous system depressant. In normal conditions, it promotes sleep and suppresses arousal. When awake the levels of adenosine in the brain rise each hour.Apr 18, 2019
MN: So adenosine levels increase during waking hours. Then they rise to an apex and we get very sleepy. As we sleep, the levels lower and our body is rested, thus we awaken rested for another day.

It’s the opposite of running out of gas! When awake the cells energy builds up adenosine. When we sleep, our cell tanks of adenosine are nearly depleted.
