My Bike Flashcards
Acceleration
change in velocity-(speed in a given direction) / time
Attract
to cause to draw near or adhere by physical force
Balanced Forces
when two forces acting on an object are equal in size but act in opposite directions
Deceleration
term used for acceleration that causes an object to slow down
Distance
the extent of space between two objects or places
Energy
the capacity for work
Electrostatic Force
the forces between particles that are caused by their electric charges
Force
forces are pushes or pulls. They are measured in Newtons
Force Diagram
simply a diagram showing all the forces acting on an object, the force’s direction and its magnitude.
Force Field
an invisible barrier of force
Friction Force
force that acts in the opposite direction to the way an object wants to slide, which creates friction.
Gradient
an increase or decrease in the magnitude of a property (e.g. temperature, pressure, or concentration) observed in passing from one point or moment to another
Gravity
force that makes things fall to the ground on Earth and other planets
Lubricant
to apply some oily or greasy substance to (a machine, parts of a mechanism, etc.) in order to diminish friction; oil or grease (something).
Magnetism
objects that produce fields that attract or repel other objects
Mass
a collection of incoherent particles, parts, or objects regarded as forming one body:
e.g- a mass of sand
Newton
the standard unit of force in the International System of Units (SI), equal to the force that produces an acceleration of one meter per second per second on a mass of one kilogram
OR
if no force acts on a body then a body
in motion will continue at a constant speed in a straight
line
North Pole
the point at which the extended axis of the earth cuts the northern half of the celestial sphere, about 1° from the North Star; the north celestial pole
Reaction Time
reaction time is the amount of time it takes to respond to a stimulus
e.g- of reaction time is when a bug stings within 1 second of being approached
Repel
if two things repel each other, they push each other away with an electrical force
S.I Units
The SI base units and their physical quantities are:
- meter for length.
- kilogram for mass.
- second for time.
- ampere for electric current.
- kelvin for temperature.
- candela for luminous intensity.
- mole for the amount of substance
South Pole
the point at which the axis of the earth extended cuts the southern half of the celestial sphere; the south celestial pole
Speed
distance / time
Ticker Timer
the ticker timer makes dots on a paper tape every fiftieth of a second.
e.g- so if a piece of tape is pulled through the timer for a second there will be 50 dots on it. Since the spaces between the dots take such a short time (1/50 s) the ticker timer is a very useful instrument for measuring short intervals of time
