What is a gene mutation?
A change in the DNA base sequence of chromosomes during DNA replication . Can include substitution and deletion. Can change the sequence of amimo acids it codes for and the protein formed.
What is substitution?
Swapping one base for a different base
What is deletion?
One base is removed causing a frame shift.
When is there no change to primary structure?
DNA is degenerate
Each amino acid is coded for by more than one triplet codon
Substitution might not cause change to amino acid sequence in primary structure
No change to bonding or tertiary structure
When can mutations cause a non functional protein?
Change to DNA triplet during replication
Change to mRNA codon
Different anticodon means different amino acid
Change to primary structure of protein
Different bonding
Changes tertiary structure
