mutations Flashcards
What is a mutation
A mutation is a change in the DNA of an organism. The change may or may not result a change to the physical characteristic of the organism
features of mutations
mutations that occur in a gamete (sperm or egg) can be passed to the next generation, whereas mutations that occur in body cells maybe harmless or may result in a disease such as cancer
Examples of mutagens
X-ray, ionizing radiation, chemicals (tar from cigarettes)
Types of mutations
substitution, insertion, deletion
What is substitution mutation
The change in base to a different base. This happens when DNA is copied incorrectly
What is insertion mutation
The insertion of an additional base into the DNA
Deletion mutation
The deletion of a base from the DNA
What is the missense and nonsense mutation
Missense mutations result when a different amino acid is being coded for. leading to a different meaning. And a nonsense mutation results when a genetic code cannot be read or has no meaning
