Mutation and Reproduction Flashcards
What is mutation?
A change in the sequence of the DNA bases
What are the risks of mutation?
- The shape of an enzyme can be affected
- Can decrease the strength of collagen
What are the three different types of mutations?
Insertions, deletions, substitution
What is insertion?
A new base is inserted. This has a knock on effect as everything else in the DNA is shifted one place to the right
What is deletion?
A base is deleted. This also has a knock on effect
What is substitution?
A random base in the DNA is swapped out for another
What is a gamete?
A sex cell
How many chromosomes does each gamete have?
23
What is sexual reproduction?
A sperm and egg fuse
Why is the offspring genetically identical to the parent in asexual reproduction?
There is only one parent
What is the cell division in asexual reproduction called?
Mitosis
