Muslims and Fertility Treatment Flashcards
Infertility is a disease so it is permissible to find a cure
“There is no disease that Allah has sent down except that He also sent down its treatment.” (Hadith, the Book of Medicine: Al-Bukhari)
Childbirth and childrearing are important family commitments. The role and status of a Muslim woman in society and the family involves her ability to have children
the couple should be able to raise a Muslim family like that of the Prophet
having children helps keep the couple and family together
IVF and AIH are permitted
they use the sperm and egg of the married couple
Shari’ah laws allow extra embryos to be destroyed as they are not yet alive
God has given people the ability to create life this way
Embryos that are destroyed in IVF are 14 days ad so they are not classed as ‘human’
Islam teaches that the soul does not enter the foetus until 120 days
Allah has given us the gift of knowledge
if it doesn’t work then that is the will of Allah
This is a way of helping Allah’s plans
The Qur’an states that it is the will of Allah if the couple has a child or not. (Surrah 42: 49-50)
it is Allah’s will if they cannot have children
“To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He gives whom He will female [children], and He gives to home He wills male” (Qur’an 42:49)
“He makes them [both] males and females, He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is Knowing and Competent” (Qur’an 42:50)
Using donor eggs or sperm is adultery
violates the contract of marriage
divorce and death brings a marriage contract to an end so the woman may not use the sperm of a former husband to conceive
the use of eggs or sperm from another person is regarded as zina, or adultery
All Muslims believe that surrogacy is wrong
children have the right to know their natural parents
violates marriage contract —there should be no third person
the child can only inherit from their biological parents
the woman who gives birth to the child is considered the mother
Allah has a Plan. There are alternative options open to a Muslim couple who want children
it is a test from Allah
Allah decides
don’t interfere with his plan
Muslim couples could adopt and devote themselves to the community in another way
