Allah
Arabic word for God; Muslims believe in the same God as Christians and Jews
Abrahamic
to do with Abraham (known as Ibrahim in Islam), Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all Abrahamic faiths because they can all be traced back to the prophet Abraham (Ibrahim)
Caliph
a successor to Muhammad in Sunni Islam, the first Caliph was Muhammad’s friend Abu Bakr
Cultural Muslim
a person who identifies as a Muslim because of history/ family/ culture but may not be practicing/ believing
Hadith
collections of sayings of the prophet Muhammad (there are different collections)
Hajj
pilgrimage to Mecca; one of the 5 pillars of Islam
Imam
- person who leads the prayer in a Mosque; 2. A successor to Muhammad* in the Shi’a tradition
Islam
a religion; literally means ‘way of peace’ or ‘submission to God’
Ka’aba
cube-like building in Mecca (Saudi Arabia) towards which Muslims pray
Masjid
preferred Muslim term for a Muslim place of worship (Mosque)
Monotheist
belief in one God; Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all monotheistic traditions
Muslim
a person who follows the religion of Islam
Night of power
The night on which the first revelation of the Qur’an to the prophet Muhammad took place
Prophet
A person who has been chosen by God to teach people about God
Qur’an
The Muslim Holy book
Ramadan
The Islam month of fasting
Revelation
To be revealed; The Qur’an is ‘revealed’ to Muhammad from God through the angel Jibril (Gabriel)
Shi’a
A Muslim group who believe that Muhammad’s son-in-law, Ali should have succeeded Muhammad
Sunni
A Muslim group who believe that Muhammad’s friend Abu-Bakr should have succeeded Muhammad; they are the majority of Muslims in the world
Sunna
The Muslim way of life, based on the words and acts of Muhammad, and preserved in the traditional literature
Tawhid
The oneness of God; the most important belief in Islam
Shirk
the worst sin in Islam, anything that gives something equal status to Allah e.g. idol worship
Zakat
giving to charity, one of the 5 pillars of Islam
