synthesis of psychoanalytic theory and music therapy; involves the use of musical improvisation to interpret unconscious processes

a way of doing and thinking about music therapy where the larger cultural, institutional, and social
context is taken into consideration; involves an awareness of the system music therapists are working within, so that music therapy is not only directed towards the individual, but at changing the system that is sometimes part of the problem
cognitive-behavioral therapy
a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving; goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and so change the way they fee
dialectical behavior therapy
a type of cognitive behavioral therapy with goals to teach people how to live in the moment, cope healthily with stress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships with others
iso priniciple
a technique by which music is matched with the mood of a client, then gradually altered to affect the desired mood state; specific to music therapy
early intervention
a support and educational system for very young children who have developmental delays or disabilities as well as children who have been victims of, or who are at high risk for child abuse and/or neglect
entrainment
the synchronization (e.g. foot tapping) of organisms to an external perceived rhythm such as human music and dance
gait training
the act of learning how to walk, either as a child, or, more frequently, after sustaining an injury or disability
melodic intonation therapy
an evidence-based treatment method that uses intoning (singing) to improve expressive language in people with aphasia by taking advantage of the undamaged right hemisphere by engaging areas that are capable of language
meta-analysis
a quantitative, formal, epidemiological study design used to systematically assess the results of previous research to derive conclusions about that body of research
mirroring
the behavior in which one person unconsciously imitates the gesture, speech pattern, or attitude of another.
musical speech stimulation (MUSTIM)
the use of musical materials such as songs, rhymes, chants, and musical phrases simulating prosodic speech gestures to stimulate non-propositional speech; uses the completion or initiation of over learned familiar song lyrics, association of words
with familiar tunes, or musical phrases to elicit functional speech responses
rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS)
a therapeutic application of pulsed rhythmic or musical stimulation in order to improve gait or gait related aspects of movement
