Music Theory Review 2 Flashcards
Define sequence
Melodic-harmonic pattern that is restated literally or with slight modification at different tonal levels often up or down a step
Define melodic sequence
Transposition of a melodic segment several times in a row, in a pattern of transposition that rises or falls by intervals of the same size
Define tonal sequence
Relationships of steps and half steps between segments are not preserved
Define real sequences
Interval relationships are preserved
Define modified sequence
A sequence in which the restatement of the segment is not literal, not because of the normal step and half-step diatonic relationships, but because some variation has been introduced
Define phrase extension
Adds lengths to a phrase by using common methods like repetition, variation, and sequence
Define elision
End of phrase overlap with the beginning of the next phrase (that is , end and beginning may share the same pitch)
Define sentence
Opens with a melodic segment which is immediately restated, transposed or untransposed.
Define period
