Early music characteristics
Monophonic with a drone note, chants were modal with limited range and in free time with no meter
Baroque characteristics
Used heavy ornamentation, motifs were repeated and often inverted, terraced dynamics with a polyphonic texture, basso continuo, heavy use of harpsicord
Classical characteristics
Short melodic phrases strung together, balanced phrasing, homophonic, dynamics change gradually and suddenly (crescendo/decrescendo), larger orchestras
Romantic characteristics
Broadening of pitch, melodies more flowing and passionate, sweeping and expansive rather than fragmented, more rhythmic freedom, larger orchestras, wider use of dynamics, and wide range of instruments
20th century characteristics
Much more experimental time, use of dissonance and chromaticism
