Music production Flashcards
What are the two main technical aspects of musical performance?
Producing correct pitches and producing correct timing
What is the role of the vocal folds?
They vibrate to make sound by increasing the tension of themselves, and can imitate sound
What is the role of the vocal tract in vocal production?
It modifies the sound and changes the color/quality. It also acts as a resonator
What are formants and how many are there?
They are containers of pitch and there are two of them
Where is formant 1 located?
Located behind the tongue
Where is formant 2 located?
Located in front of the tongue
How do formants relate to the concepts of resonators and the vocal tract?
The formants of pitch are dictated by the vocal tract, so if the tract is separated you do not have a single container.
What makes the resonator involved in singing unique?
Resonators can change the size and shape of the “container” when speaking or singing
What are the 3 basic processes involved in producing vocal sound?
Respiration, phonation, and articulation
What is respiration?
Control of breath
What is phonation?
Generates pitch quality during adduction of vocal folds
What is articulation
Manipulation of the tongue, lips, and jaw to articulate speech sounds
What makes someone a “bad” singer?
Inaccurate listening, vocal folds not being held as closely together as they should be, and poor motor schemas
What is vibrato and how is it produced?
It is the pulsation of pitch with synchronous pulsations of loudness and timbre that is produced by fluctuation in pitch around tone and by motor plan allowing tightening/relaxation of vocal folds
