what does a sharp do?
A sharp raises a note by a semitone
what does a flat do?
A flat lowers a note by a semitone.
what does a natural do?
A natural returns the note to normal.
what does pp mean?
pianissimo , very softly
what does p mean?
piano , softly
what does mp mean?
mezzo piano, quite softly
what does mf mean?
mezzo , forte quite loudly
what does f mean?
forte , loudly
what does ff mean?
fortissimo very loudly
what does < mean?
crescendo , gradually get louder
what does > mean?
> diminuendo , gradually get softer
what is a semitone?
A semitone is the smallest interval. For example, C to C# is a semitone. Remember that E to F and B to C are also semitones
what is a tone?
Two semitones added together are a tone. C to D is a tone. So is E to F#.
does C major have any flats or sharps?
C major has no sharps and no flats.
does A minor have any flats or sharps?
A minor also has no sharps or flats but it may have some G sharps in the piece. It will sound minor – dark and sad.
