History of African Music:
During the 7th century, Arabs reached North Africa and influenced the existing
culture. This is why there are many similarities between African and Arabic music.
Oral Tradition:
Music that is passed through generations by performance (not writing it down)
Idiophones:
Sound is produced by the vibration of their body being hit, struck or shaken.

Sound is produced by the vibration of a stretched membrane over a frame, which is
caused by striking the membrane

A goblet shaped drum from West Africa. The name means “Everyone gather together
in peace”. Part of the membranophone family.

An hourglass shaped drum from West Africa whose pitch can mimic the tone of
human speech. Part of the membranophone family.
Shekere:
West African percussion instrument consisting of a dried gourd with beads woven into
a net covering a gourd. In performance, it is shaken and/or hit against the hands. Part of the
idiophone family.
