Ascending and Descending
Ascending - the music gets HIGHER in pitch.
Descending - the music gets LOWER in pitch.
Stepwise and Leaping
Stepwise - moving between notes that are next to each other.
Leaping - moving notes that are far apart.
Sequence
A short melodic phrase which is repeated on higher or lower notes.
Ostinato and Riff
Concepts which mean a short repeated phrase in music.
Riff if it is in Jazz or Pop.
Ostinato if it is in ‘classical’.
Canon and Round
Canon - is a very exact form of imitation starting at different times.
Round - vocal version of a Canon.
Syncopation
When the accent of the music falls off the beat
Anacrusis
The notes before the first main beat of the bar
Andante
At a walking pace
Moderato
Moderate speed
Allegro and Adagio
Allegro - Fast tempo
Adagio - Slow tempo
Rallentando and Accelerando
R - gradually getting slower
A - gradually getting faster
A tempo
return to original tempo
crescendo and diminuendo
c - gradually getting louder
d - gradually getting quieter
Harmonic Minor Scale Sounds:
Egyptian or snake charming
Melodic Minor Scale Sounds:
Different when ascending and descending.
Pentatonic Scale Sounds:
Scottish or Oriental
