What is a passing note?

prolonged note that creates dissonance with another note that ised to be in a chord that is suspended and then comes down into the chord to match the other note
why did Bach writen the 3rd movement of Brandenburg No 5 in 2/4?
- he still wanted to divide the beat into 3 notes
- in simple time dividing 1 beat into 3 quavers (instead of 2) created triplets
- today we would write this piece in 6/8

broad and slow

melody notes leap from one to the next, missing out notes in between an Arpeggio
what is a phase?
the melody is structured in neat 2 or 4 bar patterns almost like a question and answer

what is a Pedal note?
a bass note (usually either of the answers to Q4) that is sustained whilst the chords in the orchestra change
what is a sequence?
a short motif (melodic pattern) that repeats, starting one note higher (ascending) or lower (descening) each time
what are broken chords?
playing the notes of a chord in smaller groups (even individually) and with a repeating pattern
