Musculoskeletal Terminology Flashcards
What is a condyle ?
Large, round prominence at the end of a bone, generally involved in forming a joint. Covered in articular cartilage
What is a epicondyle?
A rounded protuberance at the end of a bone, found on the condyle. Serves as an attachment for ligaments and muscles.
What is a supracondylar ridge?
Supracondylar refers to something that is above the condyles. The supracondylar ridge serves as a site for muscle attachment.
What is a capitulum?
Smooth rounded eminence on lateral aspect of distal humerus. Articulates with radius, contributes to elbow joint.
What is a trochlea?
Grooved eminence on medial aspect of distal humerus. Articulates with ulnar, contributes to elbow joint.
What is a ridge?
Eminent line or elongate border on the surface of a bone, sometimes joining two structures or bones.
What is a tubercle?
Small “knobby” protrusion that serves as an attachment point for ligaments and tendons.
What is a trochanter?
Rough prominence at the proximal aspect of the femur that serves as an attachment point for skeletal muscles.
What do we mean by tuberosity?
A moderate protrusion, sometimes rough in nature for skeletal muscle attachment.
What is a spinous process
Raised, sharp elevation of bone where muscles and connective tissue attaches. More pronounced than a normal process
What is a malleolus
Bony projections at the end of the fibula and tibia that constitute the lateral and medial malleolus, respectively.
What is a linea?
A long, thin strip or mark distinguished by texture or elevation.
What is a groove?
An indentation in the bone surface which runs along the length of a nerve or vessel
What is a interosseus border?
Edge of bone to which a fibrous membrane is attached, allowing one bone to be attached to another bone.
What is a fossa?
Shallow depression in the bone surface. It may receive an articulating bone or support structures.
