Musculoskeletal system Flashcards
Ligament
connects bones to each other
Tendons
connect muscle to bones
Cartilage
Soft, semi flexible material that is found in the joints
Axial skeleton
Foundation for which the arms and legs are hung - Composed of skull, face, thoracic cage, and vertebral column
Appendicular skeleton
Composed of the arms, legs, their connection points, and the pelvis
Thorax
Part of the torso. Encloses the heart, lungs and great vessels
Cranium
Holds and protects the brain; Composed of thick bones that form a shell
Foramen magnum
The place where the brain connects to the spinal cord
Occiput
Cranium region that is most posterior
Temporal
Cranium region that has lateral portions on the sides of the skull
Parietal
Cranium region between the temporal and the occiput regions
Frontal
Cranium region; Forehead
Maxillae
Movable jawbones; facial bone
Zygomes
Cheek bones; facial bones
Mandible
lower, movable portion of jaw; facial bones
orbit (eye socket)
made up of maxilla, zygoma, and frontal bone
Vertebrae
Bones that make up the spine
Cervical spine
The first 7 vertebrae in the neck
Thoracic spine
The 12 vertebrae in between the cervical and lumbar spine; there is one pair of ribs attached to each
Lumbar spine
The next 5 vertebrae of the spine in between the thoracic spine and the sacrum;
Sacrum
5 vertebrae fused together; joined to iliac bones of pelvis
Coccyx
Last 4 vertebrae; make up the tailbone
Thoracic cavity
Heart, lungs, esophagus, and great vessels (aorta and two vena cava); It is formed by the 12 thoracic vertebrae and the ribs
Sternum
Made up of the manubrium (upper section of the sternum), body and xiphoid process (inferior cartilaginous tip)
Shoulder girdle
Where the clavicle, scapula, and humerus come together, allowing the arm to move
Clavicle
Collarbone; overlies the superior boundaries of the thorax in front and joins posteriorly with the scapula
Scapula
Shoulder blade; lies in muscular tissue of posterior thoracic wall
Diaphragm
inferior boundary of the thorax; separates the thorax and the abdomen
Humerus
Supporting bone of the arm
Forearm
Made up of the radius and ulna
Radius
Lies on the lateral (thumb) side of and is larger in the distal forearm
Ulna
Lies on the medial side and larger in the proximal forearm
Wrist
Modified ball and socket joint formed by the ends of the radius and ulna, and the carpal bones (8)
Pelvis
composed of the sacrum and two pelvic bones
Pelvic bone
Fusion of the ilium, ischium, and pubis
Pubic symphysis
where the left and right pubis are joined; has cartilage that allows for slight motion of one side pelvis over the other
Acetabulum
Where pelvis and lower leg connect
Femur
Thigh bone; longest and one of the strongest in the body
Femoral head
Where the femur connects to acetabulum by ball and socket joint
Greater trochanter
projection of femur on lateral/superior portion; point where major thigh muscles connect to femur
Lesser trochanter
Projection of the femur on the medial/superior portion; point where major thigh muscles connect to femur
Knee
Joint that connects upper and lower leg
Patella
Kneecap; anterior to knee
Tibia
Shin bone; anterior in leg
Fibula
Lateral side of leg
Ankle
hinge joint
Joints
Articulation; where 2 long bones come in contact; consists of the ends of bones and the surrounding connecting supporting tissue
Symphysis
Joint that allows limited motion; held together by fibrous tissue
Joint capsule
fibrous sac that holds bone ends of a joint; composed of ligaments; can be thin and lax to allow motion
Sacroiliac joint
tough, thick ligaments, little motion
Synovial membrane
The inner lining of the joint capsule; special tissue responsible for making synovial fluid, which serves as a lubricant to allow the ends of the bones to glide over eachother
Ball and socket joint
Allows rotation and bending; etc shoulder
Hinge joint
Motion restricted to one plane; etc finger joints, elbow, knee
Skeletal muscle
Type of muscle allowing for voluntary movement; attaches to bones of the skeleton; can be stimulated to contract or relax at will
Smooth muscle
Found within blood vessels and intestines; not part of musculoskeletal system
Cardiac muscle
Found only in the heart; not part of the musculoskeletal system
Biceps
Muscle on the upper arm located on the anterior aspect of the humerus; moves the lower part of the arm toward the head
Triceps
Upper arm muscle; has three bundles of muscle that join together at the elbowq
