Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
Musculoskeletal system
The system of bones and skeletal muscles that supports and protects the body and permits movement
Three main functions:
1. To give the body shape
2. To protect vital organs
3. To provide for body movement
Skeleton
The bones of the body, includes the skull, spine, ribs, sternum, shoulders and upper extremities, and pelvis and lower extremities
Muscles
Tissues that can contract to allow movement of a body part
Ligaments
Tissues that connect bone to bone
Tendons
Tissues that connect muscle to bone
Skull
The bony structure of the head
Cranium
The top, back, and sides of the skull
Mandible
The lower jawbone
Maxillae
The two fused bones forming the upper jaw
Nasal bones
The nose bones
Orbits
The bony structures around the eyes, the eye sockets
Zygomatic arches
The bones that form the structure of the cheeks
Spinal column(spine)
Provides structure and support for the body and houses and protects the spinal cord. Essential for movement, sensation, and vital functions.
Vertebrae
The 33 bones of the spinal column
Cervical division
Neck area of the spine, includes 7 vertebrae
Thoracic division
Thorax, ribs and upper back area of the spine, includes 12 vertebrae
Lumbar division
Lower back area of the spine, includes 5 vertebrae
Sacral division
Back wall of the pelvis area of the spine, includes 5 vertebrae
Coccyx division
Tailbone area of the spine, includes 4 vertebrae
Thorax
The chest
Thoracic cavity
Internal cavity containing the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels
Sternum
The breastbone
Manubrium
The superior portion of the sternum
