what is a sprain?
injury to joint itself or to the ligaments.
symptoms of a sprain
pain, swelling, bruising, restricted movement
what is a strain?
injury to muscle or supporting tendon.
symptoms of a strain
pain,muscle spasm, muscle weakness,cramping,inflammation and inability to use muscle
referable criteria
severe pain, unable to bear weight on affected limb, unable to move affected joint, numbness,hasnt responded PRICE, pregnant, other medication,under 8 or elderly
what does the p in PRICE stand for?
protect. use a bandage
what does the R in PRICE stand for?
rest. rest until swelling has gone, keep weight off
what does the I in PRICE stand for?
Ice. ice cubes or freeze spray to reduce blood flow to reduce swelling and for pain relief.
what does the C in PRICE stand for?
compression. using a bandage provides support, prevents further weakening.
what does the E stand for in PRICE?
elavation. to improve drainage of waste products from damaged area
what does the H in HARM stand for?
heat. increases blood flow and increases inflammation
what does the A stand for in HARM?
alcohol.can increase inflammation and cause dehydration hence, impairing recovery.
what does the R stand for in HARM?
running exercise. can cause further damage and delay healing
what does the M stand for in M?
massage.may cause further damage and will increase blood flow and inflammation.
treatment options for bruises?
ice pack and compact to limit blood flow for at least 10 minutes.
