Musculoskeletal and Central Nervous System Flashcards
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
Initiates fight or flight responses (often positive feedback)
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
Initiates relaxation reflexes after stress (often inhibitory feedback)
What are the 3 subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic, Parasympathetic & Enteric.
What do exocrine glands do?
Release substances out of the body for example sweat or tears.
What do endocrine glands do?
Release substances (largely hormones) within the body.
What does the enteric nervous system do?
Controls the GIT with functions such as peristalsis and gastric acid secretion.
What are afferent fibres and what do they do?
Axons that carry nerve signals from sensory neurons to the CNS.
What are efferent fibres and what do they do?
Axons that carry nerve signals from the CNS to effectors (often glands and muscles).
What is the autonomic nervous system?
A component of the nervous system that controls involuntary processes such as breathing and sexual arousal.
What sort of responses do somatic motor neurons enable?
Voluntary responses.
What structures makes up the CNS?
Brain & Spinal Cord
What is Neuro Transmitter?
Chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with each other throughout the body. E.g. acetylcholine.
What is antagonistic control?
When 2 components work together in the body to control a function but have opposite functionality e.g. bicep & triceps.
What is tonic control?
What are Ganglion and what do they do?
