Muscular System Flashcards
Ability to be stretched
Extensibility
Ability to become short and thick
Contractibility
Ability to return to its original shape
Elasticity
3 main kinds of muscles and its functions
Cardiac- forms the walls of the heart & contracts to circulate blood.
Visceral- contracts to cause movement in organs
Skeletal- body movement
Difference between voluntary and involuntary
Voluntary- when a person has control over their actions
Involuntary- they function w/o conscious thought or control
4 functions of skeletal muscles
- attach to bones to provide voluntary movement
- produce heat & energy
- help maintain posture by holding the body erect
- protect internal organs
2 ways skeletal muscles attach to bones
Tendons or fascia
Decreasing the angle between two bones
Flexion
Swinging the arm around in a circle
Circumduction
Moving a body part toward the midline
Adduction
Turning the head from side to side
Rotation
Moving the arm out to the side
Abduction
Strong, tough, connective tissue cord that attaches muscles to bones
Tendon
State of partial contraction
Muscle tone
Severe tightening of a flexor muscle
Contracture
