Muscular System Flashcards
Name 3 muscles in the knee.
rectus femoris, bicep femoris and vastus medialis
What is a concentric contraction?
A contraction where the muscle shortens. For example, the bicep in the upward phase of a bicep curl.
What is an eccentric contraction?
A contraction where the muscle lengthens. For example, the bicep in the downward phase of a bicep curl.
What is an isometric contraction?
Where the muscle stays the same length. For example, holding a handstand.
What is the origin?
The bone that does not move
What is the insertion?
The part that moves
What is the fixator?
It holds the bone in place that the agonist muscle attaches too.
What is the synergist?
helps create movement
What is the structure and function of type 2 fibers?
They are fast oxidative glycotic and they are pale pink and contract quickly and powerfully. They are long fibers and are used for sprinting events like the 100m.
What are type 2 B fibers structure and function?
They are fast glycotic fibers and are also pale pink and contract quickly and powerfully. They are used for faster paced events like 400m hurdles.
What is the structure of type 1 fibers?
They are slow oxidative fibers and are a deep red colour, they are short and contract slowly but work over long periods.
What are the short term effects of exercise on the muscular system?
Bigger muscles as of increased blood flow, Muscle fatigue, muscle soreness.
What are the long term effects of exercise on the muscular system?
Hypertrophy of muscles, improved muscle co-ordination, better and more efficient blood supply.
