Muscular System Flashcards
What are the 11 muscles in the body?
Pectorals, biceps, abdominals, quadriceps, tibialis anterior, rotator cuff, deltoid, triceps, latissimus dorsi, hamstrings, gastrocnemius
What is the function of a deltoid?
Function- abduction of the shoulder
Sporting example- outward arm action in a jumping jack
What is the function of a pectoral?
Function- Adduction of the shoulder
Sporting example- upwards phase of a press up
What is the function of a tricep?
Function- Extend the elbow
Sporting example- shooting in netball
What is the function of the bicep?
Function- flex the elbow
Sporting example- drawing a bow in archery
What is the function of abdominals?
Function- flex the trunk across the stomach
Sporting example- performing a sit up
What is function of latissimus dorsi?
Function- shoulder adduction
Sporting example- butterfly stroke in swimming
What is the function of quadriceps?
Function- extend the knee
Sporting example- kicking a ball
What is the function of the hamstrings?
Function- flex the knee
Sporting example- preforming a hamstring curl on a weight machine
What is the function of the gastrocnemius?
Function- plantar flexion of the angle
Sporting example- standing on a tiptoe to mark a goal shot in netball
What is the function of the tibialis anterior?
Function- dorsi flexi on of the ankle
Sporting example- foot making contact with a football
What is a isotonic contraction?
These occur when a muscle contracts and changes length
What are the two types of isotonic contraction?
Isotonic concentric contraction- this involves the muscle shortening
Isotonic eccentric contraction- this involves the muscle lengthening whilst it is under tension
What are the antagonistic muscle pairs?
Biceps, triceps
Hamstrings, quadriceps
Glutes, hip flexors
Gastrocnemius, tibialis anterior
