Muscular Skeletal System Flashcards
What are long bones
Long bones are longer than they are wider and function as levers
How many bones does the human skeleton have?
206 bones
What are short bones
These bones have a short axis and are found in small spaces. They function to provide support and stability
What are flat bones
Flat bones are flat plates that provide protection to vital organs
What is a joint
A joint is the point where two bones meet
What is a fibrous joint
A fibrous joint aka immovable is a joint where no movement is possible
Eg bones in cranium
What is a cartilaginous joint
This joint aka slightly moveable is a joint that allows limited movement
Eg vertebral column
What is a synovial joint
This joint aka freely moveable is a joint that allows maximum movement
Eg the hip joint
What is a ligament
It is a fibrous band that connects articulating bones. They assist the joint capsule to maintain stability
What is a tendon
A tendon is a cord of tissue that attaches muscle to bone
What is synovial fluid
Synovial fluid is a lubricant that keeps the joint well oiled
What movement does a hinge join allow?
It allows flexing and extension
Eg elbow or knee
What movement does a pivot joint allow?
It allows rotation of one bone around the other
Eg top of the neck, atlas and axis bones
What move my does the balls and socket joint allow?
It allows flexion, extension, addiction and abduction
Eg shoulder and hip
What movement does a saddle joint allow?
It allows flexion , extension, addiction, abduction and circumspection
Eg joint of thumb
