Muscular Disease Flashcards
define motor neurone disease (MND)
a spectrum of heredeodegenerative diseases of the peripheral and central motor nerves - causing upper and lower motor neuron degeneration
clinical features of MND
upper motor neuron and lower motor neuron signs
describe upper motor neuron signs
spasticity
hyperreflexia
upgoing plantars
describe lower motor neuron signs
fasciculations
atrophy
hypotonia
characteristic presentation of spinal muscular atrophy
limb weakness due to involvement of spinal cord anterior horn cells
characteristic presentation of primary lateral sclerosis
spastic limb weakness due to UMN involvement of the spinal cord
characteristic presentation of bulbar palsy
early tongue and bulbar involvement - often a progressive disease
characteristic presentation of primary lateral sclerosis
UMN features ONLY
management of MND
antispasmodics (e.g. baclofen) antiglutamenergics (e.g. riluzole) anticholinergics (for drooling) analgesia emotional and symptomatic support
