Muscular Flashcards
3 types of muscular Tissue
Skeletal muscle ( striated, voluntary)
Cardiac muscle ( striated, involuntary)
Smooth muscle ( non- striated, spindle, involuntary
Electrical
(Action potentials) respond to stimulus
Contractible
Shorten in length
Extensible
Can extend/ stretch
Elastic
Return to their original shape
Sarcoplasmic reticulum
Ca2+ storage and release; terminal cisternae butt against T- tubule
Filaments
Called myofilaments thin-acting and thick myosin arranged in compartments called sarcomers
Myosin
pulls on actin/ filament slide inward
Z discs
Move towards each other/ sarcomere shortens
Sliding filament mechanism
Changes in the L band and H zone as the muscle contracts
ATP in skeletal muscle
Source of oxygen in muscle. A diffusion of blood B blood from myoglobin
Cardiac muscle
Intercalated disc/ contains desmosomes and gap junctions
Smooth muscle
Starts more slowly and last longer than skeletal and cardiac muscle contractions
Hyperplasia
Increase in number of fibers from satellite cells
New smooth muscle
Develop from pericytes/ association with blood capillaries and small veins
