Musco-skeletal System Flashcards
Define diaphysis?
Shaft of long bone. Formed from primary ossification centre.
Define epiphysis?
Ends of long bone. Secondary ossification centres.
What is the epiphyseal plate?
Thin layer of cartilage that separates the diaphysis and epiphysis.
How does the epiphyseal line form?
When the cartilage in the growth plates is replaced by bone.
Define metaphysis?
Ends of the diaphysis where bone growth occurs.
What regions does the axial skeleton include?
Skull, neck, ribs and sternum, vertebral column.
What regions does the appendicular skeleton include?
Upper and lower limbs, pectoral and pelvic girdles that attach limbs to the axial skeleton.
What are the classification groups of bones?
1) Long bones
2) Short bones (cuboidal)
3) Flat bones
4) Irregular bones
5) Sesamoid bones
What are the 3 main types of joints?
1) Fibrous
2) Cartilaginous
3) Synovial
What are the 4 components of a synovial joint?
1) Fibrous capsule
2) Articular hyaline cartilage
3) Serous synovial membrane
4) Synovial fluid
What are the names of the 2 ends of the clavicle?
Acromial (lateral) end
Sternal (medial) end
Which side of the clavicle is rough in texture?
The inferior face
Where does the clavicle articulate on the scapula?
The acromial end of the clavicle articulates with the acromion of the scapula.
Name the 3 borders of the scapula?
Superior border
Medial border
Lateral border
What is the name of the process infront of the acromion of the scapula?
Coracoid process
