Muscles & Skeleton Flashcards
Actin
I major muscle protein, whose interactions with myosin produce contraction; found in the thin filaments of the muscle fiber
Antagonistic muscles
A pair of muscles, one of which contracts and In doing so extends the other, relaxed muscle; this arrangement allows movement of the skeleton joints
Axial skeleton
The skeleton form in the body axis, including the skull, vertebral column, and the rib cage
Ball – and – socket joint
A joint in which surrounded end of one bone fits into the hollow depression in another, as in the hip; allows movement in several directions
Bone
A hard, mineralized connective tissue that is a major component of the vertebrae endoskeleton; provide support and sites for muscle attachment
Connective tissue that is a major component of the endoskeleton
Cartilage
A form of connective tissue that forms portions of the skeleton; consists principle of cartilage cells and their major extracellular secretion, collagen protein
Endoskeleton
Rigid internal skeleton with flexible joints that allow for movement
Exoskeleton
A rigid, external skeleton that supports the body, protect the internal organs, and has flexible joints that allow for movement
Extensor
A muscle that strengthens a joint
Flexor
A muscle that flexes a joint
Hinge joint
A joint at which the bones fit together in a way that allows movement in only two dimensions, as at the elbow or knee
Ligament
A tough connective tissue band connecting two bones
Motor unit
A single motor neuron, and all the muscle fibres on which it forms sign abscess
Muscle
An animal tissue, composed of cells that are capable of contracting and thereby moving specific parts of the body
Tissue, composed of cells that are capable of moving specific parts of the body
Muscle fibre
An individual muscle cell
