Muscles Of Upper Limb Flashcards
Pectoralis Major
Innervation: lateral and medial pectoral nerves
Actions: abduction, medial rotation, flexion and extension of humerus
Pectoralis Minor
I: medial pectoral nerve
A: draws scapula anteriorly and inferiority (stabilises scapula)
Subclavius
I: subclavian nerve C5, C6
A: anchors and depresses clavicle
Serrated Anterior
I: long thoracic C5, C6, C7
A: protracts and rotates scapula, abducts arm >90’
Trapezius: superior, middle, inferior
I: accessory nerve, C3 & C4 spinal nerves
A: superior elevates scapula, middle retracts scapula, inferior depresses scapula, superior and inferior rotate rotate glenoid cavity superiorly - elevating arm >90’
Lattisimus Dorsi
I: thoracodorsal nerve C6,7,8
A: extension, abducts and medially rotates humerus “climbers muscle”
Levator Scapulae
I: dorsal scapula C4,5 and cervical C3,4
A: elevates scapula, rotates scapula depressing the glenoid cavity
Rhomboids (major and minor)
I: dorsal scapula nerve C4,5
A: retracts scapula, rotates scapula depressing the glenoid cavity
Deltoid
I: axillary nerve C5,6
A: anterior part flexes arm, middle part abducts arm 15-90’, posterior part extends arm
Teres Major
I: lower subscapular nerve C5,6
A: adducts and medially rotates arm
Rotator cuff muscles
Supraspinatus: abducts arm , suprascapular nerve C5,6
Infraspinatus: lateral rotation of arm, suprascapular nerve
Teres Minor: lateral rotation of arm, weak adduction, axillary nerve C5,6
Subscapularis: medial rotation of arm, upper and lower subscapular nerves C5,6,7
Which muscle depresses scapula?
Inferior trapezius
Which muscles elevate scapula?
Superior trapezius, levator scapulae
Which muscles retract scapula?
Middle trapezius, rhomboid
Which muscle protracts scapula?
