muscles of thegluteal region Flashcards
Nerve roots for inferior gluteal nerve
and muscles innervating by it
- (L5,S1,S2)
It supplies the gluteus maximus
Nerve roots for Superior gluteal nerve
and muscles innervating by it
(L4,L5,S1)
supplies gluteus medius,
gluteus minimus
and tensor fasciae latae
Superficial abductors and extenders –
group of large muscles that abduct and extend the femur. Includes the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and tensor fascia lata.
Nerve roots for Sciatic nerve
and muscles innervating by it
(L4,L5,S1,S2,S3)–
gives tibial & common fibular nerves
Nerve roots for Posterior Cutaneous nerve of thigh
and muscles innervating by it
(S1,S2,S3)- supplies skin of scrotum,
labium majus, skin of postero-inferior quadrant of gluteal region
Nerve roots for Nerveto quadratus femoris
and muscles innervating by it
(L4,L5,S1)- supplies quadratus femoris,
inferior gemellus, hip joint
Nerve roots for Pudenda lnerve
and muscles innervating by it
(S2, S3, S4)- supplies ischiorectal fossa
Nerve roots for Nerveto obturator internus
and muscles innervating by it
(L5, S1, S2)- supplies obturator internus & superior
gemellus
Nerve roots for Perforating cutaneous nerve
and muscles innervating by it
(S2,S3)
supplies skin of postero-inferior
quadrant of gluteal region
Deep lateral rotators –
group of smaller muscles that mainly act to laterally rotate the femur. Includes the quadratus femoris, piriformis, gemellus superior, gemellus inferior and obturator internus
The arterial supply to these muscles(gluteal)
is mostly via the superior and inferior gluteal arteries – branches of the internal iliac artery. Venous drainage follows the arterial supply.

Trochanteric anastomosis(Trochantericfossa)
( arteries associated with it and location)
- Superiorgluteal artery(deep branch)
- Medialcircumflexfemoral(↑)
- Lateralcircumflexfemoral(↑)
- Inferiorglutealartery
cruciate aanastomosis ( arteries associated with it and location)
The anastomosis is at the upper part of back of femur=lessertrochanter
