Muscles of the head and neck Flashcards
Name the four muscles of mastication
Temporalis
Massager
Lateral pterygoid
Medial pterygoid
Which muscles open the mouth
Suprahyoid muscles
Which muscles close the mouth
Temporalis masseter lateral pterygoid medial pterygoid
Information
Temporalis massater lateral pterygoid medial pterygoid all receive nerve impulses from the fifth cranial nerve trigeminal nerve which caused them to contract so that the length of the muscle shortens
What is the origin and insertion of the temporalis muscle
Origin temporal bone
Insertion coronoid process of Mandeville
Can be felt and clenching teeth
Pause the mandible back in closed
Passes under the zygomatic arch
What is the origin and insertion of the masseter
Origin outer surface of zygomatic arch
Insertion outer surface of the mandibular Ramas and angle
Closes mandible
gets over developed with bruxism
Superficial can be felt when clenching
What is the origin and insertion of the lateral pterygoid
Origin lateral pterygoid plate at the base of the cranium behind the maxillary tuberosity
Insertion head of mandible condyle into the TMJ meniscus
Deeper layer muscles
Lateral pterygoid and medial pterygoid together contract pulling the mandible forwards biting anterior teeth tip to tip
What is the origin and insertion for the Medial pterygoid
Origin medial pterygoid plate at the base of the cranium just behind tuberosity closer to the midline
Insertion the inner surface of the mandible Ramas and angle closes the mandible
Together with the lateral pterygoid both contract the mandible forwards allowing anterior teeth to bite tip to tip
Deep layer muscles
What are the suprahyoid muscles
Muscles that attach to the hyoid bone for mouth opening and swallowing
Information
Anterior and posterior groups of suprahyoid muscles being in front and behind the hyoid bone the anterior groups are relevant to me
What are infrahyoid muscles
These are the muscles that Iie beneath The hyoid bone
Suprahyoid muscle anterior digastic
Motor branch of trigeminal nerve fit cranial nerve
Origin hyoid bone
Insertion in a surface of mental symphsis of mandible
Lift Hypid bone and larynx during swallowing
Paul’s mandible down to open
Mylohyoid muscle
Motor branch of trigeminal nerve fifth cranial nerve
Origin mylohyoid line of the inner surface of the mandible fusing in the mid line to form the floor of the mouth,
Insertion hyoid bone
Lift hyoid bone and larynx during swallowing and opens mouth
Glenohoyid muscle
Hypoglossal nerve the 12th cranial nerve
Origin genial tubercles inner surface of mandible
Insertion hyoid bone
Lift hyoid bone and larynx during swallowing opens mouth
All facial muscles are innerveirated by which motor branch
Seventh cranial nerve the facial nerve
