Muscles of the Face Flashcards
two muscles located superior to the orbits of the eye and comprise the musculature of the fore head, which are involved with the elevation of the eyebrows
Frontalis

Circular muscle surround the orbit of the eye. Made up of two parts
- courses around the periphery of the eye orbit
- comprises the musculature of the eyelids and is responsible for blinking actions
Orbicularis Oculi
- Orbital Part
- Palpebral Part

located superior to the mouth and course supriorly along either side of the nose. These muscles are typically involved in elevation of the upper lip.
Levator Labii Superioris Muscles

two muscles that are involved with elevation of the corners of the mouth upon smiling
Zygomaticus Major
Zygomaticus Minor

this muscle inserts upon the corners of the mouth and like zygomaticus major and minor, is also involved with the elvation of the corners of the mouth upon smiling
Risorius

circular muscle surround the mouth that is involved with contracting the lipds
Orbicularis Oris

superficial neck muscle which orginates along the clavipectoral fascia and inserts at the inferior border of the body of the mandible. The action is to elevate the skin of the neck.
Platysma

What is the origin, insertion, action and innervation of the temporalis?

Oirgin: frontal, parietal and temporal bones along the squamos suture
Insertion: coronoid process of the mandile
Action: elevation of the mandible
Innervation: mandibulaar branch of the trigeminal n
muscles located internal to the cheeks and are primarily responsible for keeping the food bolus adjacent to the molar teeth during mastication
Buccinaator Muscles

what is the origin, insertion, action and innervation of the masseter?

origin: zygomatic bone
insertion: external ramus and angle of the mandible
Action: elevation of the mandible
Innnervation: mandibular branch of the trigeminal n
this muscle originate along the mandible and insert at the lower margins of the corners of the mouth. They depress the corners of the mouth
depressor anguli oris

two muscles located inferior to the lower lips. These muscles act to depress the lower lip
Depressor Labii Inferioris

muscles located superior to the nasal bones and are typically involved with furrowing the brow.
procerus

all muscles of facial expression are innervated by what?It exhibits the cranial base through the internal acoustic meatus and divides into 5 distint branches which are?
- Facial Nerve (Cranial Nerve VII)
- 5 distinct branches
- temporal
- zygomatic
- buccal
- mandibular
- cervical
What is the origin, insertion, action and innervation of the medial and lateral pterygoids?

Origin: plates of the sphenoid bone
Insertion: internal surface of the angle of the mandible and condylar process of the mandible respectively
Action: medial and lateral grinding movements
Innervation: Madibular branch of the trigeminal n
