Muscles of the Back Flashcards
What are the Superficial or Extrinsic muscles of the back?
Trapezius
Latissimus Dorsi
Rhomboids (major/minor)
Levator Scapula
What is the OIA and insertion of the trapezius?
O: External Occipital Protuberance/Nuchal Ligament/Spinous Process of C7-T12
I: Lateral 3rd of clavicle/acromion & spine of scapula
A: Elevates, depresses, rotates, fixes scapula; extends neck
Innervation: Accessory Nerve & cervical plexus
What are the muscles of the intermediate back?
What are the muscles of the Deep Superficial back?
Splenius Capitis
Splenius Cervicis
What are the muscles of the Deep Intermediate back?
Erector Spinae
(going from lateral to medial)
a. illiocostalis
b. longissimus
c. spinalis
What are the muscles of the Deep Deep back?
Multifidi
Rotatores
Semispinalis Capitis
What are all of the Deep muscles of the back innervated by?
They are all innevervated by the dorsal rami of the spinal nerve.
What is the OIA and innervation of the Latissimus Dorsi?
O:Thoracolumbar Fascia T7-L5, sacrum and illiac crest
I:Intertubercular groove
A: Adduction/ Extension
Innervation: Thoracodorsal N.
What is the OIA of the Rhomboidius Major?
O: T1-T4
I: Medial border of scapula
A: Retraction/fixes the scapula
Innervation: Dosral scapular n.
What is the OIA of the rhomboideus minor?
O: C6-C7
I: Medial border of scapula
A: Retraction/fixes the scapula
Innervation: Dosral scapular n.
What is the OIA of the levator scapula?
O: C1-C4
I: Superior angle of scapula
A: Elevation of scapula/laterally fixes neck
Innervation: Dosral scapular n.
What is the OIA of the Serratus Posterior Superior?
O: C7-T3
I: Superior border of ribs 2-5
A: Mostly proprioception but also helps with respiration, elevates ribs
Innervation: 1st intercostal n.
What is the OIA of the serratus posterior inferior?
O: T11-T12
I: Inferior border of ribs 10-12
A: Mostly proprioception but also helps with respiration, depresses ribs
Innervation: Last 4 intercostals
What type of felxion do the Splenius Capitis and Splenius Cervicis do?
Ipsolateral lateral flexion
What type of flexion does the erector spinae do when one side is flexed?
Ipsolateral lateral flexion
