Muscles Of The Anterior Trunk Flashcards
Pectoralis Major
Superficial
Whole muscle adducts and medially rotates arm
Subscapularis
Deep muscle
Medially rotates arm
Serratus Anterior
Abducts scapula and rotates it upwards. Occurs when throwing a punch.
Pectoralis Minor
Abducts scapula and rotates it downwards
Rectus Abdominis
Superficial
Flexes vertebral column and compresses abdomen
External Oblique
Superficial
Bilateral contraction flexes vertebral column and compresses abdomen.
Unilateral contraction laterally flexes and rotates vertebral column to the OPPOSITE side.
Internal oblique
Deep
Unilateral contraction laterally flexes and rotates vertebral column to the SAME side
Transversus abdominis
Deep
Compresses abdomen and stabilizes trunk
External intercostals
Deep
Increase thoracic diameter by elevating ribs during inspiration
Internal intercostals
Deep
Decrease thoracic diameter by depressing ribs during forced expiration
Deltoid
Superficial
Anterior fibers: flex and medially rotate arm
Lateral fibers: abduct arm
Posterior fibers: extend and laterally rotate arm
Diaphragm
Deep
Flattens, increasing length of thoracic cage, during normal inspiration
