muscles of rib cage wall Flashcards
(19 cards)
Pulls sternum, clavicle, and ribs UPWARDS
Origin: top of sternum and sternal end of clavicle
Sternocleidomastoid
I: skull (mastoid process
Scalenus Anterior and Scalenus Medius
Function: lifts first rib
Origin of Anterior: 3-6th cervical vertebrae
Origin of Medius: lower 6 cervical vertebrae
I: first rib
Scalenus Posterior
Function: lifts second rib
O: lower 2 or 3 cervical vertebrae
I: outer surface of 2nd rib
Function: pulls sternum and ribs upward
Origin: upper costal cartilages, sternum, inner half of clavicle
Pectoralis Major
I: humerus
O: 2-5th ribs near cartilage
I: scapula
pectoralis minor
Function: elevates 2nd -5th ribs
O: clavicle
I: first rib
Subclavius
Function: lifts first rib
Function: elevates upper ribs
Origin: upper 8 or 9 ribs
Serratus Anterior
I: scapula
External Intercostals
Function: elevates rib directly below it. can move indivs or groups, stiffens spaces between ribs
Internal Intercostals
InterOSSeous portion: depress ribs and stiffen spaces in between
interCARTilageneus portion: elevates ribs
O: lower sternum and 4th or 5th-7th costal cartilages
I: inner surface of costal cartilages and bony ends of 2-6th ribs
Transversus Thoracis
Function: depresses ribs 2-6
Latissimus Dorsi
I: humerus
F: compresses lower portion of rib cage OR elevates lower ribs if humerus is fixed– does BOTH
O: 6 thoracic, lumbar, and sacral vertebrae, and lower 3-4 ribs
Function: elevates 2nd through 5th ribs
Origin: last cervical vertebrae and first 3-4 thoracic vertebrae
Serratus Posterior Superior
Insertion: 2-5th ribs
Function: depresses lower 4 ribs
Origin: lower 2 thoracic and upper 2-3 lumbar vertebrae
Serratus Posterior Inferior
I: lower 4 ribs
Lateral Iliocostalis Cervicis
F: elevates 3-6 ribs
O: 3-6th ribs
I: 4-6 cervical vertebrae
Lateral Iliocostalis thoracis
F: stabilizes and goes with whoever is working
O: lower 6 ribs
I: Upper 6 ribs
Lateral Iliocostalis lumborum
F: depresses lower 6 ribs
O: lumbodorsal fascia, lumbar vertebrae, hip bone
I: lower 6 ribs
Levatores Costarum
I: rib immediately below the vertebra of origin
F: lifts individual rib into its insertion, collectively elevates rib cage as a unit
O: 7th cervical and upper 11 thoracic vertebrae
F: pulls downward on lowest rib
O: hip bone
Quadratus Lumborum
I: first 4 lumbar vertebra and lowest rib
O: near vertebral column on inner surface of ribs
I: inner surface of ribs directly 1 or 2 above it
Subcostal Muscles
F: pull downward on attached ribs
number and location varies
