Muscles of Respiration Flashcards
What is the origin of the central tendon?
Apex of the diaphragm
What is the insertion of the central tendon?
Apex of the diaphragm
What is the function of the central tendon?
Holds muscle together
What is the origin of the diaphragm?
Xiphoid process, lower ribs
What is the insertion of the diaphragm?
Central tendon (on the center of the diaphragm)
What is the function of the diaphragm?
Contraction flattens the muscle and increases the volume of the thoracic cavity (inhalation). Relaxation causes the muscle to go back to normal curvature and decrease the volume of the thoracic cavity (exhalation).
What is the origin/insertion of the external intercostal muscles?
Intercostal space
What is the function of the external intercostal muscles?
Contractions increase the volume of the thoracic cavity (inspiration/inhalation); found between the ribs; runs ventral –> caudal
What is the origin/insertion of the internal intercostal muscles?
Intercostal space
What is the function of the internal intercostal muscles?
Contractions decrease the volume of the thoracic cavity (exhalation/expiration); found between the ribs; runs ventral –> cranial
What is the origin of the tendons of the crura?
Upper lumbar vertebrae
What is the insertion of the tendons of the crura?
Central tendon
What is the function of the tendons of the crura?
Form tethers for contraction of the diaphragm
