Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
What are the 4 muscles
Temporalis
Masseter (mass eater)
Med and Lat Pterygoid (behind mandible), originate from medial and lateral pterygoid plates
Blood supply to these muscles
Maxillary artery
Innervation
Mandibular V3 (branch of trigeminal)
TMJ articulating surfaces
Mandibular fossa
articular tubercle of temporal bone
head of mandible
TMJ ligaments
Lateral
Sphenomandibular
Stylomandibular
TMJ innervation
CN V3 (auriculotemporal and masseteric branches)
TMJ artery
Superficial Temporal Artery
Infratemporal fossa
Ant- post maxilla Post- mastoid and styloid process Med-lateral pterygoid plate Lat-ramus of mandible Roof- greater wing sphenoid
Temporal fossa
Post Sup: temporal line
Ant: bones zygomatic and frontal
Lat: zygomatic arch
Inf: infratemporal crest
Infratemporal fossa contents (4)
Maxillary artery (term. branch arterial supply of face and neck- external carotid)
Otic ganglion (PARASYMP. GANGLION JUST BELOW FORAMEN OVALE)
Inf part temporalis muscle
Lateral and medial pterygoid muscles
Temporalis
O- temporal line skull
I- CORONOID process mandible
A-elevates mandible, retrusion, lateral movements same side
I- CN V3
Masseter
O- ZYGOMATIC ARCH
I- lateral surface mandibular ramus
A- elevates mandible, closes jaw, protrusion, retrusion, lateral movement (grinding and chewing)
I- Trigeminal (CN 5), mandibular branch (CN V3)
Medial Pterygoid
O-Lat pterygoid plate
I-medial surface mandibular ramus
A-elevates mandible, close jaw, slide mandible from side to side (of opposite side), protrusion
I-‘’
Lat Pterygoid
O- lat pterygoid plate
I- medial surface mandibular ramus
A- OPENS JAW, protrudes mandible, lateral excursion (of opposite side)(slide from side to side)
I- ‘’
Upper lip innervation
