Muscles Of Mastication Flashcards
What’s the origin of temporalis muscle?
It originates from the temporal fossa, temporal fascia and the inferior temporal line.
What’s the insertion of temporalis muscle?
It inserts on the coronoid process and the anterior border of ramus of the mandible.
What’s the action of temporalis?
Anterior fibers elevate the mandible and posterior fibers retract it.
What’s the origin of masseter muscle?
Superficial fibers from the lower border of zygomatic arch and deep fibers from deep surface of zygomatic arch.
What’s the insertion of masseter?
It inserts on the lateral surface of the ramus of the mandible.
What’s the action of masseter?
Elevation by deep fibers
and protrusion by superficial fibers
What’s the origin of the lateral pterygoid?
Upper part from the infra temporal surface and crest of the GW of sphenoid
Lower part from the lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid surface plate.
Where do the two heads of lateral pterygoid insert?
They insert on the pterygoid fovea, articular disc and capsule of TMJ
Mention the origin and insertion of medial pterygoid
From maxillary tuberosity and medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate and inserts on the medial surface of the ramus of the mandible.
All muscles of mastication are supplied by….. except the medial pterygoid which is supplied by….
Anterior division of mandibular nerve
Mandibular trunk itself (n. to medial pterygoid)
