Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
What are the four Muscles of Mastication?
- ) Temporalis
- ) Massater
- ) Lateral Pterygoid
- ) Medial Pterygoid
O of Temporalis
- ) Floor of Temporal Fossa
2. ) Deep Surface of Temporal Fascia
I of Temporalis
- ) Anterior surface of Ramus of Mandible
2. ) Coronoid process of Mandible
Action of Temporalis
- ) Elevates Mandible; closing jaw
2. ) Posterior fibers retrude a protruded jaw
Innervation of Temporalis
Deep Temporal braces of mandibular nerve
—Cranial Nerve V3
O of Massater
1.) Inferior medial border of zygomatic arch
I of Massater
Lateral surface of the ramus of mandible & it’s coronoid process
Action of Massater
- ) Elevates Mandible; closing jaw
- ) Protrudes mandible
- —deep fibers retrude
Innervation of Massater
Massenteric Nerve
—Branches of mandibular nerve CN V3
O of Lateral Pterygoid
Superior Head:
1.) Infratemperal surface & Infratemporal crest of greater wing of scaphoid
Inferior Head:
1.) Lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate
I of Lateral Pterygoid
- ) Neck of Mandible
2. ) Articular disc & capsule of TMJ
Action of Lateral Pterygoid
1.) Protudes mandible and drops jaw
ALONE- produces side to side movement
Innervation of Lateral Pterygoid
Lateral Pterygoid Nerve
—Branch of Mandibular Nerve (V3)
O of Medial Pterygoid
Deep Head 1.) Medial surface of Lateral Pteygoid Plate 2.) Pyramidal Process of palatine bone Superficial Head 1.) Tuberosity of the maxilla
I of Medial Pterygoid
Medial surface of ramus of mandible
