Muscles of Mastication Flashcards
Temporalis Muscle Origin
temporal fossa and fascia
Temporalis Muscle Insertion
coronoid process and anterior border of ramus of mandible
Action of Temporalis muscle
elevate and retrude the mandible
Masseter Muscle origin(Superficial head)
Anterior 2/3 of zygomatic arch
Masster Muscle Origin(Deep head)
inner aspect of zygomatic arch and inner border of post. 1/3.
Action of Masseter (Superficial head )
elevate, protrude the mandible
Action of Masseter (deep head )
retrude from a protruded position.
Lateral Pterygoid (superior head) origin
Roof of infratemporal fossa – greater wing of sphenoid
Lateral Pterygoid (inferior head) origin
– Lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate
Lateral Pterygoid (superior head) insertion
Pterygoid fovea, TMJ capsule and disc
Lateral Pterygoid( inferior head) insertion
Pterygoid fovea
Lateral Pterygoid action
Acting alone – move mandible to opposite side
Acting together – protrude the mandible, pulls articular disc forward, depress
Medial pterygoid origin
Medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate and maxillary tuberosity
Medial pterygoid insertion
Medial surface of ramus of mandible
Medial pterygoid action
elevate and protrude the mandible
