Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Superficial layer Pronator teres Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- ulnar head to coronoid process
- humeral head to medial epicondyle of humerus
Distal attachment
- middle of lateral radial surface convexity
Innervation
- Median nerve (C6, C7)
Main action
- Pronates and flexes forearm at elbow

Distal attachment
- base of 2nd metacarpal
Innervation
- Median nerve (C6, C7)
Main action
- Flexes and abducts hand (at wrist)
Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Superficial layer Palmaris longus Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- medial epicondyle of humerus
Distal attachment
- distal 1/2 of flexor retinaculum + apex of palmar aponeurosis
Innervation
- median nerve (C7, C8)
Main action
- flexes hand at wrist and tenses aponeurosis
Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Superficial layer Flexor carpi ulnaris Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- humeral head to medial epicondyle of humerus
- ulnar head to olecranon and posterior border of ulna via aponeurosis
Distal attachment
- pisiform, hook of hamate + 5th metacarpal
Innervation
- ulnar nerve (C7, C8)
Main action
- flexes and adducts hand at wrist
The common flexor origin is?
Medial epicondyle of humerus
Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Intermediate layer Flexor digitorum superficialis Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- humero-ulnar head to medial epicondyle of humerus + coronoid process
- radial head to superior 1/2 of ant border
Distal attachment
- shafts of middle phalanges of medial 4 digits
Innervation
- media nerve (C7, C8, T1)
Main action
- flexes middle phalanges at proximal interphalangeal joints of middle 4 digits
- also flexes proximal phalanges at metacarpophalangeal joints when acting more strongly
Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Deep layer Flexor digitorum profundus Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- medial part + lateral part to proximal 3/4 of medial + ant surfaces of ulna and interosseous membrane
Distal attachment
- medial part to bases of distal phalanges of 4th + 5th digits
- lateral part to bases of distal phalanges of 2nd + 3rd digits)
Innervation
- medial part by ulnar nerve (C8, T1)
- lateral part by ant interosseous nerve (C8, T1)
Main action
- flex their respective distal phalanges (4/5 vs 2/3) at distal interphalangeal joints
Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Deep layer Flexor pollicis longus Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- ant surface of radius and adjacent interosseous membrane
Distal attachment
- base of distal phalanx of thumb
Innervation
- anterior interosseous nerve (C8, T1)
Main action
- flexes phalanges of 1st digit
Muscles of anterior compartment of forearm Deep layer Pronator quadratus Proximal attachment Distal attachment Innervation Main action
Proximal attachment
- distal 1/4 of ant surface of ulnar
Distal attachment
- distal 1/4 of ant surface of radius
Innervation
- anterior interosseous nerve (C8, T1)
Main action
- pronates forearm
- deep fibres bind radius + ulnar together
