Muscles of Facial Expression Flashcards
Which Cranial Nerve innervates the muscles of the face
Cranial Nerve VII Facial Nerve
How many different groups of facial muscles are there
5
What are the different groups of facial muscles
Oral Nasal Orbital Auricular Calvaria and Neck
What are some of the muscles of facial expression
Orbicularis Oris
Zygomaticus Major + Minor
Levator Anguli Oris
What does the Orbicularis Oris muscle do
Helps to close and pucker, whistle and lip round
Important in swallowing to keep the food in and speech sound production
What does the Zygomaticus Major and Minor muscles do
They are muscles that pull the lips up and back when we smile
What does the Levator Anguli Oris muscle do
This helps to elevate the angle of the mouth so our mouth is pulled upwards and deepens the nasiolabial fold
What does the Depressor Anguli Oris muscle do
This pulls down the corner of the mouth - best seen when making a sad face
What does the Levator Labii Superioris muscle do
This helps to elevate the upper lip and deepening on the nasolabial fold (smile lines)
What does the Depressor Labii Superioris muscle do
This helps to pull the lower lip downwards during mastication and may contribute to facial expressions such as sadness
What does the Risorius muscle do
Helps to pull the muscles laterally when laughing or smiling
What does the Mentalis muscle do
Wrinkles the skin of the chin and protrudes the lower lip
What does the Buccinator muscle do
One of the primary muscles of the cheek. It is important in mastication as it compresses during chewing. It also directs food between the teeth. It also assists in whistling, sucking and blowing
